We spent our first day in Rome walking randomly about ten miles. I forgot the map.
I learned to speak fluent Italian. I and Sheila ordered a glass of red wine each (in Italy glass = half-bottle) but she only took a sip of hers. I, not wanting to offend, drank the rest. Che buona sera!
Everything's impressive in Rome except the graffiti (and graffiti's an Italian word). Rome is probably the only place in the world where graffiti's done in Helvetica font.
I haven't seen so many nuns in one day in years.
Rome is pretty big, but most of the streets are cobbled and narrow. It's like a bunch of small cities haphazardly glued together. In the whole city there doesn't seem to be a building more than a few stories high. From the roof of where we're staying, we have a view across the city but the only thing that sticks out is St Peter's dome.
Other pictures (some of George) to come later. I forgot to bring a USB to connect Sheila's camera to my laptop and need to buy one.
Tomorrow we plan a better organized day in Rome.
