This is a general overview of what we propose to do and see. There will be changes for sure as we bone up on travel guides, talk to friends... Then too, my friend Richard in Rome has a doctorate in fine arts and an expertise in Italian church architecture. I'm sure he'll have some good advice for us.

Rome: 4 days
The place where we're staying during our first lap in Rome is on the Vatican side of the Tiber. We plan to visit St Peter's on the 18 or 19. That will include an elevator to the roof and (if I can convince Sheila) a climb to the summit of the dome (a mere 320 steps).
The Sistine Chapel and Vatican Museums on the 21 (they're closed that Saturday and Sunday). On the weekend we'll stroll over the river toward the Piazza Navona and the Pantheon. Maybe we'll take a trip down to Ostia Antica, the ruins of the port of classical Rome.
Other places to see: and to be announced
Florence: 6 days
Florence itself, of course, but where to begin? There's so much...
Still we plan a day trip to Siena (prompted by the recommendations of many friends).
Rome: 4 days
The second lap in Rome will focus more on classical Rome (the Colosseum, Forum, Baths of Caracalla, etc).
But also St John Lateran, Santa Maria Maggiore, Capitoline Museum...
Maybe--if we're not toured out by then--a trip to Pompeii.
