From Rome to Exeter... From ahh to ugh

We left behind two weeks of 65 - 75 degree weather and found...

Wednesday:
George picks flowers for Ella
near the Via Appia.
Friday:
George freezes his butt in Exeter.
George wants to go back
to Rome.

It was one of the Best Vacations Ever--except for the last day in Rome and the return trip. For those of you who don't yet know, Sheila had complications resulting from diverticulitis (as we found out later) which became quite painful on Wednesday and Thursday. As soon as we got home on Thursday, she went to the emergency room and was operated on in the wee hours of the morning. She's in the Exeter Hospital now, recovering well. The doctors say she'll be home tomorrow.

Thanks to Bob Prior for driving me to the hospital in a snowstorm and Matthias for coming down and driving me home. After the operation, around 2AM, when I'd been awake for a jet-lagged 26 hours and was groggily about to home, the nurse pointed to me and asked Matthias in a scolding voice, "He's not driving is he?" It was a day that Sheila and I will not soon forget.

But, in spite of that, it was a wonderful vacation, and I plan to continue the blog as a record of the trip. I plan to include observations and hints that might be helpful for anyone who decides to go the Rome of Italy in the near future.
